Chagri Dorjeden Monastery, also known as the Cheri Monastery, is Bhutan's first monastery, built in 1620 by the legendary Ngawang Namgyal.

The monastery is set on a hilltop at the end of a steep trail that passes through pine forest. The stunning view of the monastery makes the uphill hike worthwhile. Inside the monastery, there are standing statues of warrior deities dressed up in authentic attire with shields, helmet, and arrows.

It is believed that monks meditate here for three years, three months and three days to seek enlightenment. Cheri monastery is also a popular retreat centre and meditational abode for those seeking peace.
