To step out of our shoes and daily routines and experience life through another set of eyes gives us a profound insight into the core of humanity. The same core which runs through every human being. We learn appreciation and connection and see that our similarities are much greater than our differences, no matter how things may appear on the outside.
Our entire experience of life begins with our mind. The quality of this experience depends on our mind’s reactions to life’s joys and sorrows. If we can remain mindful, we can analyze our thoughts before reacting to them and gain deeper understanding and insight to ultimately becoming stronger in the face of adversity. This allows us to find peace during times of stress and hardship which eventually lead to a more calm and balanced life.
Bhutan, for much of its history, has been known and referred to as a land of healing. Varying practices of mental, physical, and spiritual healing are ingrained in the culture of the kingdom. Guided meditation is widely practiced for mental wellbeing. Sound Healing is used daily for relaxation and rejuvenation. Bhutan is also known as the “land of medicinal herbs,” best showcased by the traditional Hot Stone Baths which use sacred, mineral rich river stones.
Happiness is such an important concept to Bhutan and the Bhutanese people that the government measures its success by Gross National Happiness (GNH) rather than by Gross Domestic Product. As a Kingdom with a strong Buddhist tradition, mindfulness and mental wellness are actively sought after and celebrated. Many lessons can be learned from this appraoch to life that the Bhutanese people take.
